Hello SMES Suzuki families and Studio Wie families,
We're excited to be holding a joint recital this weekend! :-) Here is what you need to know for this Saturday's concert.
When: This Saturday, November 7th, 2015. Please arrive no later than 11am! Doors will open at 11am. We plan to begin the recital at 11:15am, and will end at approximately 12:45pm.
Where: The Performing Arts Center at St. Margaret's Episcopal School, 31641 La Novia Ave, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. The Performing Arts Center is located at the north end of the school's campus. When you arrive, please use the front (south-facing) doors to enter.
Parking: Please ONLY park in the Highland parking lot on the corner of La Novia and Ortega Highway in the yellow parking spaces. (The school is located in the same block as a shopping center, and the shopping center parking spaces are marked in white. Please do NOT park in the white spaces. Thank you!
Bring: Yourself, your instrument, and if you will be using sheet music instead of playing from memory, bring your sheet music. (You do not need to bring a music stand.)
Dress: Performers should dress nicely (any color scheme is fine). If you are unsure about what to wear, please consult your private lesson teacher.
Program Order: The preliminary program order is listed in a Google drive document here. Please help us proof-read the program by double-checking that your NAME is spelled correctly and that the piece of music listed for you to perform is correct.
When you arrive: Please enter the Performing Arts Center, please go to the orchestra room and get out your instrument. A teacher will direct you where to go after this. Performers will be sitting in performance order in the front two rows of the audience in order to help us facilitate quick and easy transitions between each student's performance.
Invite: Please feel free to invite family or friends who would like to hear you perform!
Contact: If you have questions, please feel free to call or text me (Jennifer Visick) at 626-824-2836, or contact your private lesson teacher directly. Please note that the SMES email system is currently down, so I will not see any emails sent to firstname.lastname@example.org at this time.
We're excited to hear the results of all your hard work when you share your music this Saturday! See you soon,
"Children learn to smile from their parents." - Shinichi Suzuki-
Hello Suzuki String Academy families,
I'm glad we're off to a great start in our Suzuki music classes this year, with both new and returning students playing music together!
Over the past two weeks we've noticed a few things that will help our group classes run smoother, which we might not have told new families yet, and which returning families might have forgotten. Please help us with these things!
1) When you arrive, please walk in the room and...
2) Siblings or other family members are welcome to quietly observe the group class or private lesson, but...
3) If you need to leave class early...
4) If you need to miss a group class...
Thanks for your help & cooperation in this! As always, please let us know if you have any questions about classes, lessons, or practicing and listening to music at home.
-Jennifer Visick & Kania Gandasetiawan-
“To make a resolution and act accordingly is to live with hope. There may be difficulties and hardships, but not disappointment or despair if you follow the path steadily. Do not hurry. This is a fundamental rule. If you hurry and collapse or tumble down, nothing is achieved. Do not rest in your efforts; this is another fundamental rule. Without stopping, without haste, carefully taking a step at a time forward will surely get you there.”

Looking ahead - Summer 2016:
In the works: The Wie family and I are in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Matsumoto, Japan, and would like to invite any of our students who are able to join us! Shinichi Suzuki honed his teaching method in Matsumoto and it is still the place to find the heart of Suzuki music instruction.
Attending a summer Suzuki music workshop in Matsumoto is an amazing multi-cultural musical experience (that can also be combined with family vacation/sight-seeing in Japan either before or after the music workshop). You don't have to be fluent in Japanese in order to learn something from these summer classes: you can play music together with other people - and learn from how they play - no matter what language you speak!
For those families interested in coming with us, I'll be updating you with more specific dates, costs, and options, as the details fall into place. This is not an SMES event.
We will also be offering summer group classes & private lessons at SMES for part of the summer, dates TBA; and as usual, there are always good options for children's summer music institutes right here in California such as the Los Angeles Suzuki Institute, San Diego's "Strings by the Sea", the Santa Barbara Suzuki Institute, and our own music institute week here at St. Margaret's.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about this year's Suzuki string classes. I look forward to seeing you all soon,
"Children learn to smile from their parents." -Shinichi Suzuki
Hello SMES Suzuki violin families,
We just finished a great week of lessons, classes and concerts at our first ever Capistrano String Institute! I hope that those of you who were able to attend have learned how to play the violin better and have been inspired to practice and reach a higher level of musicianship. :-)
This week we are resuming Tuesday group classes (July 14, and July 21) at 3:30pm. We will also hold group classes on August 4th and August 11th.
Ms. Kania's and my own schedules are different this summer, so please confirm any private lesson time & date details separately with your private lesson teacher.
You can now register for summer (June, July, August) violin lessons and group classes online:
4 group + 4 private
5 group + 5 private
6 group + 6 private
7 group + 7 private
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Hello everyone, a few announcements:
Finally a big CONGRATULATIONS to Maddie and Sabine who both completed their "Twinkle" graduation performance at Zipper Hall in downtown L.A. last Sunday afternoon!
Have a musical two weeks!
"Children learn to smile from their parents." -Shinichi Suzuki-
Tomorrow is our last day of the "first semester" of Suzuki classes. I'll be sending a link to register for the second semester a little later this week.
As we begin our second semester, here are some upcoming events that you should know about!
For those of you who are not participating in the graduation this year, even though the drive to the Colburn school is a little far from San Juan Capistrano, I do encourage you to attend this graduation concert as an audience member if you can! Your presence supports Sabine and Maddie and allows you to become familiar with the concert and venue in anticipation of your future participation. Hearing and seeing other Suzuki students at different levels can be a great motivator for you and your child and provide a goal for you to work towards.
More information can be found at www.capostrings.org
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions!
"Knowledge is not skill. Knowledge plus 10,000 times is skill." - Shinichi Suzuki-
Thanks You to all our students and their practice partners for sharing something from your experience in Suzuki violin lessons this week!
Listening to other people perform is one of the ways we become better musicians. Although we do not have a chance to hold a "sharing" group class every day, you can still listen to other musicians every day through radio broadcasts, recordings you own, online or through finding local concerts to attend (KUSC.org has a list of SoCal musical events and can be a good place to start looking for a local concert to attend).
If you are not already doing so, please set aside time to listen to the music you are working on, daily! If you misplaced or did not get to class to pick up this week's Practice Partner worksheet & letter, you can read a copy of the "Aunt Rhody" letter on listening, here.
If you did not get a chance to share with the class this week due to absence, please be ready to share at our next group class. We will look forward to hearing from you in two weeks on Tuesday Nov. 4th, which brings me to a some schedule announcements/reminders:
All the best,
“Don’t hurry don’t rest. Without stopping, without haste, carefully taking one step at a time will surely get you there.” - Shinichi Suzuki, from his book "Nurtured by Love"
Hello SMES Suzuki families!
On the one hand, tone takes time, but on the other hand, there comes a day when we are still working, yet we are able to share what we are learning with others. Next week - we'll talk about how to receive and share music with each other.
"Put up in a place
where it's easy to see
the cryptic admonishment
'T. T. T.'
When you feel how depressingly
slowly you climb,
It's well to remember that
Things Take Time."
(Or, as a viola teacher I once worked with likes to say when practicing music: Tone Takes Time.)
All the best,
-Jennifer Visick and Kania Gandasetiawan--
Hello SMES Suzuki Families! Here are a few reminders.
1) We named the Twinkle Variations a couple of weeks ago. Here are our "official" 2014-15 school year names for the Twinkle Rhythms.
2) Didn't get a chance to read last week's letter on the back of your Practice Partner Worksheet (or weren't in class and didn't get a worksheet?) You can read this week's "Tone" letter here: auntrhody.org/so-what-s-the-big-deal-about-tone
