Just a couple reminders, and one new thing (since we did not have group class this week):
1) Next Tuesday please be prepared to share your *new* words for the "Jelly Doughnut Pan-cake" rhythm (Twinkle Variation A) in group class. If you're having trouble, email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) your ideas so far and I can provide feedback! Remember: the first four syllables have to be spoken faster than the last two syllables.
2) So far, it looks like just a few of our families have registered. Everyone else: please register for the Suzuki Violin Academy group classes and private lessons online at http://reg125.imperisoft.com/SMES/Search/Registration.aspx
(The error message that some of you received about not being able to determine if there is a conflict should now be fixed - please try registering again if you received this error).
3) And here's the "new" thing for this week: Parents, please check out the online discussion boards on the Suzuki Association of the Americas Website. Create a username and password if you don't have one there, and start looking for a discussion thread to contribute to. Post something! (Question, comment, answer to someone else's question). Let me know when you've made a post. Doesn't have to be long! https://suzukiassociation.org/discuss/

I have some announcements/reminders, and following that, I've listed the violin group class homework for this week and next week (in addition to any violin assignments your private teacher has given you).
Announcement 1: There is no class next Tuesday. (General rule of thumb: if there is no school on a Tuesday, there is no group class that day. If there is no school on your private lesson day, there is no lesson scheduled for that day).
Announcement 2: Online registration is now up. If you have trouble registering, please let me know! The registration website link is: http://reg125.imperisoft.com/SMES/Search/Registration.aspx
Announcement 3: We are working on creating a practice video "library" on this website, and we hope to add one or two new videos each week. We've started with some of the "basics" and will be adding more advanced videos as well, in the coming weeks. Yes, this means you can now bring me and Mrs. Wie (and, occasionally, Arthur) into your home and pretend that you are in group class while playing or singing along to the videos! ;-)
Announcement 4: If your private teacher has spoken to you about participating in the Suzuki Music Association of California, Los Angeles branch's graduations this Spring, please be sure to go online to www.suzukimusiclosangeles.com and become a member, so that you will be eligible to send in your graduation audition/recording when the time comes in February.
If you have any questions about any of these announcements, please don't hesitate to let us know!
Group Class Homework Assignment #1: Please think of new words to fit the first Twinkle "Variation A" Rhythm (Jelly Doughnut Pan-cake), and be ready to share them in class on January 28th.
In class today were mentioned:
-Peanut butter sand-wich
-AnakinSky walk-er (though it was decided this might better fit the "eat ice cream eat cookies" rhythm instead)
-Chicken on a Fence-post
Hint: Think of this rhythm as four (faster) syllables plus two (slower) syllables. Try to choose words that you don't have to significantly change the way you would ordinarily speak them in order to make them fit the rhythm.
Homework Assignement #2: Please choose a piece of music from the Suzuki Volume 1 to listen to and practice "walking" (no touching anything or anyone!) and "anticipating" the last note of the music by returning to your starting spot when the last not occurs.
Hint: this exercise is most useful if you challenge yourself with a piece that you remember hearing in class, a piece of music that you didn't quite anticipate the ending of as well as you would like to be able to do! Try it a few times in a row, see if you can get better at predicting the last note!
We'll see a few of you for lessons on Friday, and everyone for our next group class on Tuesday January 28th.

Happy New Year! I hope that you all have had a good break. We're excited to start teaching violin again on Tuesday January 7th! Here are some things to put on your calendar for the Suzuki Academy this semester.
This semester's schedule includes 18 group events + 16 half hour private lessons. Tuition is $780.00, which includes all group events and private lessons. Although the online registration is not quite up yet, it should be up soon, and when ready will be found HERE.
Group classes will meet on Tuesdays at 3:15pm in the Orchestra room in the PAC at St. Margaret's, starting this coming Tuesday, January 7th. The last regular group class of the school year is scheduled for Tuesday May 20th. Group classes will not be held on school holidays (which are Jan. 21, Feb. 18, and Apr. 1).
We will be sharing a performance as a group on the Spring Orchestra Concert on Tuesday evening, April 15th, at 6:30pm, in Hurlbut Theater in the Performing Arts Center. On this Tuesday, the regular group class at 3:15 will be a rehearsal for the evening concert. There will be no private lessons on this date.
-If you have your private lessons on Tuesdays, your first private lesson of the semester is scheduled for January 7th and your last lesson is scheduled for May 20th.
-If your lessons are on Wednesdays, your next private lesson is scheduled for January 8th and your last lesson of the school year will be May 14th.
-If you have your lessons on Fridays, your next private lesson is scheduled for January 10th and your last lesson of the school year will be May 30.
(Note: Due to the Thanksgiving holiday last semester, if you have private lessons on either Wednesdays or Fridays, the January 8th & 10th lessons technically belong to Fall semester, and your count of 16 private lessons for this semester begin on either Jan. 15th or 17th, respectively.)
There are NO private lessons scheduled on the following dates:
Tue Jan 21 - (In-Service Day, No School)
Feb. 18th through Feb 21st - (Winter Break - No School)
April 1st through April 4th - (Spring Break - No School)
Tue Apr 15 (There IS Group class AND a group performance scheduled on this date, but there are NO private lessons on this date).
Fri Apr 18 - (Good Friday - No School)
Fri May 23 - (Your teachers have a schedule conflict on this date)
If you must miss a private lesson or a group class, or arrive late or leave early for any reason, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. SMES has a no-makeup-lesson policy for private lessons. However, we encourage students and families to participate in other school events, and occasionally these things cannot be planned to not conflict ahead of time (for example, a student who auditions for a part in a school musical might end up having a rehearsal call time for the musical during a private lesson time).
If you must miss one or more private lessons due to an SMES event, we will be scheduling a "masterclass style" group hour during the usual group class time on Tuesday May 27th and/or June 3rd. The time will be divided evenly between all students who missed private lessons due to SMES events such as the lower school musical, etc.; "masterclass style" means that student/parent teams get to observe and learn from each other’s lessons as well as from their own.
Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions! See you on Tuesday,
